Items necessary for the Bris

In the main room where the Bris is to take place you will need:

  • Table.  A sturdy table (better than a card table) would be ideal.  The circumcision will be performed either directly on the table, or on the Sandek's lap with the table holding the instruments.  Also on the table will be the Kiddush cup.  The table should be placed in a room so that the Sandek, the parents, and myself, can stand behind it.  There should be enough room in front of the table for the guests.  Guests should be standing during the ceremony.   Cover the table with a cloth table sheet (I recommend blue or white).
  • The table should be well lit with a bright light source.
  • A large pillow if the Bris is to be performed directly on the Sandek's lap.
  • Two sturdy chairs, one for the Sandek, one for Elijah’s chair.
  • Kosher red grape wine for the ceremony. I recommend to use a sweet Shabbat wine such as Manechevitz.  Take care to ensure that the wine is made from grapes (and not blackberry or cherry).
  • A pair of candles and candleholders if the Bris is in the home (optional; not on Shabbat or Yom Tov).
  • Challah for the festive meal (any kosher bread can be substituted if desired).
  • A brown paper garbage bag under the table. (shopping bag size-to be used as a trash bin)
  • Several Kippot (yarmulkes) for the guests.
  • A Tallit for the Sandek and another for the father. A third Tallit can be used to decorate Elijah's Chair.

We will also need a separate room to do the pre-examination of the child. This room must have the following:

  • A closeable door.
  • A small table with a chair in front of it. This table should allow one person to sit behind it to hold the baby.
  • A bright light shining onto the table.
  • Trash bin (brown paper garbage bag, shopping bag size may be used)
  • Diapers, baby wipes, a receiving blanket, bulb syringe, a box of 4 X 4 gauze pads a jar or tube of Vaseline jelly, and Infant Tylenol.

Other instructions before the Bris

  • Stop feeding the baby one hour before the Bris.  He can be fed immediately afterwards.
  • Please give your infant 80 mg (2.5 ml or ½ tsp) of infant Tylenol 1 hour before the scheduled time of the Brit Milah. DO NOT USE MOTRIN, ADVIL, OR ANY MEDICATION OTHER THAN TYLENOL OR ACETAMINOPHEN
  • The baby should wear an outfit that can be raised above the diaper level.
  • Turn off the phones and answering machine before the ceremony.  Place a sign on the door that reads "Please come in" so that guests will not knock on the door during the ceremony.  Remind guests to turn off cell phones before the ceremony.
  • Have your guests come 15 to 30 minutes before the start of the ceremony so that it may begin on time.
  • Photographs and video are OK (except on Shabbat or Yom Tov).
  • It is traditional to have a festive meal after the Brit Milah (except on fast days).
  • Please contact me immediately if your child has any significant medical problems prior to the Brit Milah.
  • Please review my post-procedure instructions and let me know if you have any questions.
